I need to say that I am more proud of this project than anything I've ever done. For me this project is a return to my roots - my R&B-soul-radio junkie roots. It's not a completely categorizable album, but for the most part, it’s a badass pop record with lyrical depth, catchy melodies, and groove, groove, groove.
As I've been telling you, it turns out that David and I have great songwriting chemistry. We hit the ground running and didn't stop until we were done. I loved working with him. He has the same pure love for Music that I do. He grew up steeped in it, just like I did. And David has this inner compass for what simply sounds good.
So we'd always start with the concept. Once we had one we liked, we'd settle on a feel for the song, then he would go to work creating the rhythm tracks; the blueprint, if you will. Then I'd lay down some acoustic guitar, he would add keys and strings, and synth sounds, etc. Once we had a groove established, I'd get to writing lyrics. (This was our process for 7 out of 10 of these songs. Of the remaining 3, one is David's song he generously let me record for this album, and the other 2 were previously written or co-written by me.) The most affirming part of all of this was to feel the payoff of all of my years of writing. Because in the presence of his mastery and in this atmosphere of absolute freedom to create, I was inspired to write at a level worthy of complimenting David's know-how.
Then? I'd get to sing. Imagine the thing you love most to do in your life. Now imagine working with someone who somehow knew just how to help you take that to the next level. David brought out things in me vocally I didn't know were there. There is no doubt in my mind I am a better vocalist because of this experience.
I CANNOT WAIT for you to hear this record.
In the meantime, to update you on an estimated timeline, here's what's still to be done:
* Record live musicians onto the record. Then he will mix and master.
* Choose the first single and write and shoot its video.
* Get rewards to KS Backers
* Put all the pieces together to go live with the first single and music video.
* CD Release Party with VIP privileges for my Kickstarter family!!!
* Determine the best methods of digital distribution so the music can be purchased online
* Determine marketing strategies for national and international exposure
* Social media consultation to learn the best ways to use that mighty marketing force
* Uploading all the necessary video, audio, and other information to my Youtube channel and website.
Then, if things go well... No... Then, WHEN this record takes off and I have some bankroll, I'll need to:
Get a good entertainment lawyer.
Find a promoter who can get me in front of the right audiences.
Work with a music director to create the TV track for my live show. (This is a prerecorded track for the live band to play along with that fills out the sound so it comes across exactly like the record. This enables me to bring the best possible live show to any venue, and blow the room away. It also separates the pros from the amateurs.
Audition and hire musicians for my band.
Rehearse the live show until we can do it in our sleep.
Book shows and hit the road to show the world what happens when you don't give up on a dream.
And THAT's how you do it. And I'm freaking out inside.
Here are some of the things I do when that happens:
Close my eyes and breathe, trying to bring myself to this very moment and nothing else.
See myself on stage performing.
Remember that it's the journey. Not the destination.
Pop in the earbuds and listen to what we've created.
Hear my name when the list of nominees for Best New Artist is announced at the Grammys.
See myself accepting the award (usually Prince or Bette Midler are presenting it.)
Remember that so many people love me, support me, and are behind me 1,000%.
